Craft Coffee | Coffee Shop Design
An interior design for a boutique coffee company’s first site within the coastal town of Folkestone. It was important for this design to integrate with the local community and thriving creative quarter, while remaining a relatively low-cost project for this independent client.
Lunar Lunar worked closely with the client to create a layout that would work efficiently for the production of their crafted coffee while also providing optimum staff/customer flow.
The centrally placed counter makes best use of the space within two columns, and also allows for two areas of seating. A central takeaway point ensures those customers can easily enter and exit the coffee shop without disturbing seating and service.
The design took inspiration from the textures and colours of the seafront. The vertical band of colour represents the sea and horizon, and this runs through the design scheme from outside in, continuing onto the floor treatment. The architecture remained much the same with the only major changes being the proposal of replacing the existing single-glazed windows and main entrance.
The use of wood within the interior is inspired by the colour of the Folkestone beach pebbles and sand, whilst the profile of the counter front panels reflect the curved seawalls seen along the coastline. The concrete worktop and galvanised light fittings are also inspired by seawall finishes.
The cafe walls exhibit pieces from local artists displayed on a bespoke peg system that allows for different art to be featured throughout the year - a variety of sizes can be hung with ease. Lunar Lunar also proposed the use of locally made ceramics for sit-in tableware, supporting small businesses and celebrating the creative quarter.
